Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during my initial consult?

Our first meeting is all about understanding what you (the client) need and ensuring that Bitterroot Legal Services is the right law firm for your situation. Time is limited so it’s important that we stay on topic about the specific legal issue that brought you to our attorneys.

First, we will go over your intake forms to determine what forms of communication you prefer and if there are any type of accommodations you need. Then, we will visit and discuss your legal concerns. Please submit any supporting documentation related to your case before this appointment. Finally, we will wrap up with a plan outlining the next steps to take and an hourly rate or per document cost based on your situation, needs, and goals.

What is the difference between a phone appointment vs
an initial consult?

Phone appointments are advice-only appointments that cost $60 - $75/hr and you will pay before the call begins. It is best to have all of your questions prepared beforehand due to the short nature of these calls. There is no future representation with the attorney thereafter unless Bitterroot Legal Services chooses to extend the representation. These calls are usually best if you need clarity on what your next legal steps are, and if you plan on representing yourself.

An initial consult is a longer appointment that addresses more complex legal issues and extended legal representation that cannot be resolved during a one-hour phone advice call. Attorneys will not provide a legal conclusion at the end of the call without doing further research and performing due diligence. The type, price, and schedule of future representation will be determined at the end of the consultation. These consultations are usually appropriate for matters in which you do plan on hiring an attorney to do some or all of the legal work for you.

What if I can’t afford legal representation?

If you can’t afford an attorney, you can always choose to represent yourself. There is a
Self-Help Family Law Center that is located inside the Missoula County Courthouse. Staff there will provide you with the paperwork necessary to start your civil case but staff members are not attorneys and cannot provide you with legal advice.

You can also go online to MontanaLawHelp.org for free legal information, guides, forms, and advice and apply for representation with Montana Legal Services Association.
